Jumbo is probably more of a 'long mountain' or trail race. I think of the elevation profile as looking like a triangle or a right angle for a classic with a little horizontal line at either end. As opposed to more of a saw tooth for a trail. That being said the boundaries between race types can be a bit fuzzy and the elevation profile is pretty similar to Luxmore, with both failing the no need to be self-sufficient for food and drink test.
Here's the World Athletics definition:
Up&down classic races
- Races of less than 20km for the classic format (42km maximum for the long-distance format)
- Difference in altitude of between 50 and 250m per kilometre of race, ideally around 100 to 150m and if possible at least 300m difference in altitude between the lowest and highest points.
- Most of the route can be run without danger, and no orienteering or mountaineering skills are required.
- No need to be self-sufficient in food, with refreshments close by.
Great article mate, out of interest. How would you class a race like Jumbo Holdsworth? One big up , some tops and one big down. A bit to long?
