Great read Michael. Very timely that you mention sticking to the plan and not overdoing it. I'm normally quite good at that but at the weekend adapted a workout and definitely overcooked it which bled into today's long run which may impact this weeks training too. What you are saying resonates with me and it's something I'm telling my friends who have taken up running recently.
Yeah it's a real tough one its so easy when you're starting out to overextend or miss training and try and catch-up. For a long time I especially found reading my body and knowing when to hold back or extend difficult. I think external life stresses precipitate injuries a lot more than people realise as well and can compound the stress.
For me personally what I was thinking about when I wrote it was about the emotional investment you put into a single race or an outcome, and not worrying about it too much when you've got a broader plan. Which can be particularly hard for younger athletes when they're trying to prove themselves.
